Labrador Retrievers can make excellent guard dogs because of their size, strength, and natural guarding instincts. However, a typical first instinct is for a dog to run home after it’s been scared or hurt–this can make them less effective as protectors. That isn’t the only factor though! A key factor in any dog’s ability as a protector is its training and early socialization as well as how old it was when socialized with other animals. Protection instincts will only take root if these things happen at an early age–so don’t introduce your Lab to incompatible pets until they’re two years old at the earliest…
