Bulldogs are small dogs that resemble the now extinct Olde English Bulldogge, not Spanish Fighting Bulldogs. The original Bulldog was used as a breed for blood sports such as bull-baiting, bear-baiting, and cockfighting. These sports combined the “sports” of unsettling an enraged animal, often made mad with hunger or pain, to goad it into attacking one or more animals set upon by several humans at once – usually other dogs but occasionally bears, bulls, or other animals.
