Golden Retrievers have a high number of vocalizations, one reason that makes them quite different from other breeds. In general, puppies produce the widest range of vocalizations and they will stop doing this when they reach adulthood. The most common sound is “woof” but if more excited, the pup may let out some yips accompanied by bobbing of its head (similar to playing).
Golden Retrievers are also capable of making noises not found in any other breed. One such noise is called “false growling”, during which it seems like the dog has stopped barking but actually more likely pressing air through special soft tissues within their throat (which produces what sounds like an aggressive bark)…
