A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a microchip that handles the graphical display processing of any given laptop, computer, or even phone screen. A GPU centralizes all graphics rendering work to one specialized processor unit in order to maximize system performance. Laptops do not have GPUs because they are limited in their need for gaming or other graphic intense programs which utilize the GPU in large quantities.
Laptops are isolated devices with little need to output graphics onto an external device like a TV or projector so it would be more practical to simply use an AV reader instead of using two devices – one for display, and another for reading DVD/CD media externally.
