Pit Bulls have been the subject of a media-driven negative image in America, and in some cases are banned. There is no law that bans the possession or ownership of a Pit Bull in any state.
Pit bulls were originally bred in England by crossing Old English Terriers with Old English Bulldogs to create a dog who would display bulldog characteristics on shorter legs with more agility and swiftness than the parent breeds possessed.
