German Shepherds have been present in the United States for over 80 years now, after being first introduced from Germany as early as 1879. Most sources believe that the introduction of German Shepherds to America is synonymous with their formal recognition as a breed and this happened at three different points. In 1899, it was recognized by a society for animal husbandry where a German shepherd won a prestigious award for its excellent working skills.
