When Did Water Bottles Become Popular?

There are two answers to this question, one modern and one long-term.
The modern answer is that it has been suggested that industry may have adopted the use of plastic water bottles as a response to milk producers switching from glass jugs to plastic dairy containers in order for milk not to be spoiled by the sunlight. The long-term answer is that it’s difficult even now to know definitively when people first started filling glassware with water, but there are good reasons for thinking glass was always associated with drinking water.

Glass is an inert substance which does not react or leach chemicals into the liquid because it flows over its surface during manufacture due to high temperature treatment.
