Apple fruit is expensive because there are only ever a few varieties in the grocery stores.
It’s not that apple fruit itself is expensive, it’s that the choices in the grocery store are overwhelmingly limited to just one or two options. Which means you’re paying through the roof for something an oligopoly has taken out all the competition.
But here’s good news! Not only will your taste buds wake up when you start eating whole foods, but you’ll also find many different types of apples at your local farmer’s market, including Galas, Golden Delicious, Granny Smiths… so go ahead and get them while they’re in season! Golden Delicious are my personal favorite– they have a great crispy texture with hints of pineapple…
